Strike action by French air traffic controllers is likely to affect thousands of European travellers today in the latest of a series of strikes by French public sector workers.

Around 400 flights to and from France have been cancelled today, Ryanair is the worst effected airline with more than 200 cancellations.  Flights with budget airline Easyjet are also affected and they warned travellers on twitter this morning to check their website before travelling to the airport.

The strike will also have knock on effects for European travellers who are not visiting France as closure of much of the country’s airspace will lead to delays on many European flights.

If you flights are cancelled today EU regulations allow you to book onto the next available flight without penalty and also require airlines to cover the cost of any additional overnight accommodation as well as food.

Those travelling to France by train or ferry are likely to be unaffected by the strikes, Eurostar and P&O Ferries have both confirmed that they expect services to operate as normal.
