Winter is approaching disturbingly quickly and while some are starting to think about mince pies and hibernation snow lovers are starting to think about this winter’s ski holiday. While there are plenty of cheap trips to the snow available online this year, how many people are considering travelling by train? In fact over the winter period Eurostar operates a direct service from London St Pancras to some of the best holiday destinations in the Alps.
The direct service operates from the 19th of December to the 16th of April and travels to Moûtiers, Aime-la-Plagne and Bourg-St-Maurice all of which are less than an hour away from the best skiing in the Alps. A night train departs London every Friday at 2031 allowing you to get even more time in on the slopes by waking up first thing on Saturday morning in the Alps. A day train departs every Saturday and Sunday and allows you to enjoy stunning scenery as you travel to your ski break. An evening meal and breakfast are served on the night train and the bar remains open until midnight for any extra drinks and snacks. A light lunch with wine is served on the day service which can be supplemented with snacks from the buffet car.
With fares starting at £149 train travel to the Alps can be as cost effective as it is environmentally friendly, particularly when you consider that Eurostar allows travellers to carry two pieces of luggage along with a pair of skis or a snowboard as standard. This compares very favourably with budget airlines such as Ryanair who charge £50 for a 20kg bag and another £80 for skis or a snowboard.
