Mountain trekking is Tibet’s most popular tourist activity. Camping on hilltops, meandering through rice fields, trawling through forests and walking amidst the backdrop of towering mountain ranges, is a fulfilling way to experience Nepal and appreciate the country’s ethnic and cultural diversities.
When arriving in Nepal, I was taken by the kindness of the locals. Home to over 60 different ethnic groups who speak over 70 different languages, the Nepalese are extremely welcoming and friendly, and are known for their infectious smiles. Whether interacting with them in coffee shops, on the streets or along the many trails that wind through hill top villages that have been in existence for thousands of years, one cannot help but be charmed by their hospitality and cultural rituals.
The two most popular treks are the Everest Base Camp Trek (Mountain Region Parbat, situated in the Great Himalayan Range) and the Annapurna Circuit situated in the Annapurna range. There are many different treks offered in the Everest and Annapurna regions.
Types of trekking
- Teahouse trekking, bhatti are found along the many trekking trails. Bhattis provide accommodation and delicious tea and coffee facilities.
- Backpacking trekking, budget tenting options are available and you are required to take a limited amount of baggage
- Organise your own trek. Research is important to help you arrange food, accommodation and porters
- Trekking through operators. All the logistics are organised through tour operators, and it can assist in making your trek a more smooth-running experience. This is the most expensive of all the trekking types
Mount Everest Base Camp Trek Solukhumbu
The most popular trek is the Everest Base Camp from the Nepalese side. Trekking starts from Jiri and reaches the Everest base camp at an elevation of 5,450 meters. The main trail to the base camp is a comforting mix of elements - the trail is lined with tea-houses, lodges, bars and Internet cafes. Nepalese porters are observed carrying baskets over their heads being followed by a large group of mules and most comforting of all is the fellow trekkers who are always willing to share stories.
Annapurna Circuit
The Annapurna Circuit attracts adventurous trekkers and offers both relatively manageable to complex trekking experiences. The Annapurna region has the most unparalleled views of the Himalayas - Alpine meadows and bamboo forests. The wildlife is abundant and sightings of the majestic Danphe bird is an unforgettable experience.
- Trekking through the Thorang La Pass which is 5416m high, with picturesque views
- Kali Gandaki gorge to Jomsom. This is a popular trekking route in the Annapurna region
Trekking in Nepal will require that you pass through both the cities of Kathmandu and Pokhara.
Holy Kathmandu
Kathmandu is home to 7 World Heritage Sites and is an intense mix of loud taxis hurtling across the the narrow, and pollution-filled roads with tourist hubs such as the Thamel area. It is worth your while to take a stroll through the Old Town and appreciate the medieval architecture and local hospitality. Durban Square houses beautiful temples and monuments. The local Newari food is delicious - make sure to taste the choyela (buffalo meat) and beaten rice flavoured with complex spices.
Luscious Lakes of Pokhara
Pokhara is set on the stunning Phewa Tal lake. Take a row boat along the lake on a clear winter’s day and see the Annapurna mountain perfectly reflecting off the lake.Taking a trek up the World Peace Pogoda and enjoy the breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains. End off your day by paying a visit to one of the many cafes that line the lake with a glass of local tongba (warm millet beer).
Trekking Costs
Trekking cost vary and can be based around your budget and the kind of trekking packages you choose. Along with accommodation, food and porter costs, trekking permits need to be purchased, as well as park fees for certain areas. Trekking, although adrenaline-filled especially in Nepal, can be dangerous and it is always advisable to ensure you have trekking insurance.
As the birthplace of Buddha, Nepal is a spiritual country adorned with a great many Hindu Temples and Buddhist shrines. The magnificent mountain scenery offers panoramic views of endless proportions and offers nature lovers an aesthetic pleasure. While political clashes between government forces and the Maoists have had a devastating impact on its tourism industry and the country’s weak economy, the small country still rivals as one of the best mountainous regions in the world. Nepal has a great deal to offer travellers who are in search of adventure, rich culture and overwhelming beauty.
