Crete is the largest Greek Island, and is found in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. No place on earth is quite like this tropical haven. With warm weather year round, stunning beaches, beautiful waters for swimming and diving, great food and a friendly local population, what's not to love? With all that there is to do in Crete, travelers shouldn't miss one of the best opportunities of all - whale watching in Crete. Crete holidays simply wouldn't be complete without this incredible experience. Here are some tips for where to whale watch, what to expect and a few tips for your adventure.

Where to Find Whales in Crete?

In the South of the island of Crete, dolphins and whales can be found swimming through the deep blue water. Specifically, visitors can see both sperm whales and Ziphius whales during the winter months of November to February. While some whales are occasionally spotted in spring or summer months, your best chance to see a while close-up will undoubtedly occur during the winter time. If your stay is based on whale watching, or you want to pick a place close to the action for a day or two of your trip to Crete, your best choice will be to stay in one of the hotels on the South side of the island, specifically the harbor town of Paleochora. This is where the majority of boats will leave for whale watching Crete excursions.

More About Paleochora

The town of Paleochora is a beautiful and relaxing place, known as one of the top locations for a Crete holiday. It is at the base of the White Mountains, providing stunning views to locals and travelers alike. The nearest airport is in Chania, roughly 2 hours a way by car or bus. The beaches are beautiful but not crowded, and the entire town has managed to find the prefect blend of modern hotels and amenities, along with a quaint and charming atmosphere. Of course, one of the biggest reasons that travelers choose to stay in Paleochora is because of the opportunity to go whale watching. Seek out one of the many Crete excursions that leave from this harbor.

What To Expect While Whale Watching

If you head out in the recommended winter months, you will have great chances of spotting a whale from a small tourism boat tour. Most tours only last a few hours, and set out in the early morning for the best chance of spotting whales. Keep in mind that even experienced guides won't be comfortable getting too close to these majestic creatures, but they will get the boat as close as possible while still keeping everyone onboard safe for the journey.
