There are some rail journeys so iconic that the only name that we could give this section is Great Rail Journeys. Names like Trans-Siberian, Orient Express and the Indian Pacific evoke a sense of romance and history which continues to appeal to generation after generation of travellers. This section isn't just devoted to the iconic, there are rail journeys throughout the world that would make any traveller's experience richer whether because of spectacular scenery, the cultural experience, or even the speed, length or height of the journey. Some are still relatively well known, such as the highest train ride in the world from Shanghai to Lhasa in Tibet, and some are known only to locals and train enthusiasts, such as the Settle to Carlisle railway.
