Located around 570 kilometres from the Western Coastline of Africa, Cape Verde is comprised of 10 islands in the Atlantic Ocean. The islands have a population of 567,000 people, with the largest, Santiago, home to the country's capital, Praia. They are collectively known as Macaronesia, and contain 24 cities in total, including Mindelo and Cidade Velha. Their official language is Portuguese. In 2007 an airport opened in Boa Vista, and tourism is increasing due to the islands beaches, wildlife and kite boarding and wave sailing, both popular activities on these volcanic islands.
