On Morocco's Atlantic coastline to the west of the country lies the city of Essaouira, sheltered from marine winds by the island of Mogador. The city has a population of 70,000 inhabitants, and in its walled areas vehicles are banned, so there's a curiously historic feel to the horse-drawn carts which clatter its streets. It's beach is perfect for windsurfing and a visit to the nearby town of Ziabat makes for a lovely walk along the coastline.
