Guide to Suzhou

map
In the Southeast of Eastern China, on the Yangtze River around 100 kilometres to the west of Shanghai lies the city of Suzhou, with a total population of 1.6 million people in its urban area. The cityscape is renowned for its beauty, comprising, as it does, bridges, manicured gardens and beautiful pagodas. In particular, the city's classical gardens earned World Heritage Status. As well as too many achingly beautiful sights to list, the city is flat enough to be explored by bicycle in fine weather, and those who are homesick should head to Ping Jiang Road, a place with numerous English and western style coffee shops.
