Guide to Jaipur

map
A planned city with a population of 3.1 million inhabitants, Jaipur is in the eastern area of Rajasthan, and is crossed by the rivers Banas and Banganga. The city is a famous tourist attraction, and is called The Pink City for its buildings, which are painted to mimic sandstone architecture. Among its sights of interest are the observatory which date from the 1730s, the highly significant Govind Devji Temple and the City Palace, a huge complex built by Maharajah Jai Singh II. Don't miss the Amber Fort, which lies on a forested promontory, and receives over 5000 visitors a day.
