Guide to Kyoto

map
With a population of 1.5 million inhabitants, Kyoto is the largest city and capital of Kyoto prefecture. It lies in the centre of the island, in the eastern part of the Tamba highlands, surrounded by the mountains of Higashiyama, Kitayama and Nishiyama, and three rivers; Ujigawa, Katsuragawa and Kamogawa. A former capital of Japan, it's known for the beauty of its city, with several World Heritage Sites to be found in the northern areas of town. Among many unmissable sights, cherry blossom viewing is highly recommended.
