The island of Sri Lanka is a drop in the ocean – literally. Shaped like a teardrop, and of a size similar to that of Ireland, it sits off the coast of the Indian subcontinent in the Indian Ocean. But the island’s size does nothing to detract from its vigorous tourist industry, with its white sand beaches, tropical climate, green-clad mountains and diversity of culture drawing travellers from around the world. It all makes the island’s moniker, ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’, even more fitting.
