Located in East Asia, to the west of China, Tibet is a mountainous region where many major Chinese Rivers originate. The highest region on the planet, Tibet comprises the prefectures of Lhasa, Qamdo, Nagqu, Ngari, Nyingchi, Shannan and Xigatse. Tourism is regulated by the Chinese government, and the only way most travellers can see the country is by organised tour. Beautiful palaces, temples and monasteries break up the plateau, including the Summer Palace of the Dalai Lama. Don't miss out on drinking tea in a traditional Tibetan tea house, or for something stronger, grab a bottle of Chang, the Tibetan beer.
