Guide to Lhasa

map
The second largest city on the Tibetan Plateau, Lhasa has a population of over 373,000 people living in its urban area. It lies in a basin of the Himalaya Mountains, at an elevation of 11,800 feet, and to the north of the Kyi River. It's well known for being at the heart of Tibet, and its Eastern areas in particular are quite traditional. Don't miss the 7th century Jokhang Temple, home to many famous statues, and the Potala Palace, a World Heritage Site containing hand-written scriptures and priceless antiques.
