Around 270 kilometres to the south west of Sydney, towards the eastern coast of southern Australia, lies Canberra, its capital city. It has a total population of 345,000 people, and was entirely planned from its founding in 1908. Well known for its man-made lakes, and geometric layout, Canberra is also a popular base for outdoor enthusiasts. As well as the culturally significant National Portrait Gallery, the Old Parliament House and the National Library of Australia, the city is home to the National Dinosaur Museum.
