Located in the South Pacific Ocean to the east of New Zealand, the Cook Islands comprise 15 different little islands spread over 1.8 million square kilometres of ocean, and are partly governed by New Zealand. They have a total population of just under 20,000 people, and were formed by volcanic activity. The islands are split between the northern and the southern areas. Their capital is Avarua, a town located in the north of Rarotonga Island with its own International airport; another significant destination is Aitutaki, with tilting palms, crystalline lagoons and powdery beaches.
