Located around 1500 kilometres to the east of Australia, the islands of New Caledonia comprise Grand Terre, the Loyalty Islands, Belep and the Isle of Pines, in the Pacific Ocean. They have a total population of 256,000 people, and their capital and largest city is Nouma. Known for its beaches, chalets and snorkelling, the region's official language, and much of its cultural influence is French. Its largest peak is 1,600 metres high. Visit the beautiful botanic gardens; plunge into a bit of windsurfing or hike and camp in the more mountainous regions.
