Guide to New Zealand

map

Situated in the Southwestern Pacific Ocean, New Zealand might be far-flung as you can get for most travellers, but its isolation is all part of its distinct charm. Aotearoa, its Maori name, means the land of the long white cloud. It comprises a North and South island, along with scattered, smaller atolls, ranging from tropical to Antarctic, with a total population of 4.4 million people split between them. Its North Island features volcanos, hot springs and geysers in its central areas. South Island, meanwhile, claims the country’s highest point: Mount Cook is one of the islands Alps which trace its western coastline. Ahead of the game in many respects, New Zealand was one of the first countries to give women the vote, to enforce social security and child welfare payments, and continues today in a liberal vein: it recognised same-sex marriages way back as 2004. General Information

Weather in New Zealand

Living, or visiting , a long skinny country in the middle of the ocean, and nowhere near other countries to warm us up, means you can expect unexpected weather always: the old 'four seasons in one day' stuff. This is esecially true on our hiking trails ... be prepared!

While it's sort of a rule the further north you are the warmer it is, that really only applies to the winter months! For instance, Christchurch is warmer in summer than Auckland BUT way colder in winter.

So bring layers of clothing, a warm hat, and remember our best summer month is Feburary. if you are going to Asia or the Pacific islands the the same time  as you trip right down under, i recommend you start in NZ and work your way north ... if you start in Fiji or Thailand, Malaysia, and muuch of Australia, you will get colder and colder as you travel south ... starting at the bottom of the world and then going onto Australia etc means you will get warmer and warmer! Our coldest months are July and August.
