Stretching 12 kilometres across Westland Tai Poutinin National Park on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island, the Franz Josef Glacier is located around 30 minutes by car from the Fox Glacier, a similarly impressive sight. It spreads from the Southern Alps into low-lying coastal rainforest, and is surrounded by Te Wahipounamu, a World Heritage Site. With around 250,000 visitors a year, it's very popular with tourists.
