Guide to Invercargill

map
The southernmost city in New Zealand, Invercargill is located on the fertile farmland of the Southland Plains, on the shore of the New River Estuary, close to Oreti Beach. It has a total population of 49,000 people living in its urban area. It's known as the commercial centre of the Southland region, and is curiously named for many of the rivers which striate Great Britain, including the Tyne and the Don! There's a strong Scottish sense of ancestry, and any visitors should head to the lovely green expanses of Queen's Park, with a zoo, duck pond and rose gardens.
