The region of Central America and the Caribbean is made up of the seven countries on the narrow isthmus between Columbia and Mexico, and the multitudes of islands in the Caribbean Sea to their east. Geologically, the whole region sits on the Caribbean Plate, sandwiched between the North American and South American tectonic plates. This situation is the reason behind the high level of volcanic activity the region is known for.


 

Like the Incas to the south, the indigenous peoples of Central America had fully developed societies long before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors. The Mayan and Aztec empires occupied this area and the ruins of a number of their cities can still be visited today.
