Immediately to the southeast of the USA, the Bahamas speckle the Atlantic Ocean, just north of Cuba and form one of the richest countries in the Western Hemisphere. Known for their aquamarine water, tilting palms, and piratical past, the Bahamas comprises over 2,000 islands. Tourism accounts for nearly a half of all jobs. The islands bring to mind hammocks and rum cake, but they have a unique and lively culture to be explored beyond tourist cliché, in the Junkanoo festival which rocks the streets on Nassau on Boxing Day, or in the sounds of Calypso, Soca or Rake and Scrape music which originated on the islands.
