The physical and administrative heart of Costa Rica, San Jose is a bustling city which sprawls within a verdant valley surrounded by mountains. It can be a little overwhelming at first due to its size and chaotic streets, but has a lot to offer once you scratch beneath the surface.
International travellers will most likely begin their Costa Rican adventure in San Jose airport. Taxis are plentiful and will take you anywhere in San Jose. Good advice is to book a hotel or hostel in advance and have the address ready, agreeing to a fare before you get in the cab. There are an abundance of places to stay, with the quieter areas outside downtown such as Los Yoses and Barrios Amon boasting the most luxurious hotels, many of them in old colonial houses. San Pedro is the university area, and the hostels there are the most attractive in the city.
