Mexico's second largest city, Guadalajara has a population of 1.5 million inhabitants living in its urban areas. Famous as the home of Mariachi music, and as Mexico's cultural centre, it's much more relaxed than Mexico City. Its historic centre is rich in religious architecture, some of the most beautiful being Guadalajara Cathedral, the Plaza of the Crosses and the Templo Expiatorio. Don't forget to visit in September for the Day of the Mariachi, held by the astounding white columns of the Teatro Degollado.
