Central Asia for many adventurous travellers holds huge romantic appeal as the home to wandering nomads and the location of the historic Silk Road. The region is made up from a number of former Soviet republics; Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. These ‘Stans' are often referred to together as Turkestan, the pre Soviet name for the area. In a wider context the region also covers Afghanistan, as well as parts of Iran, China and Pakistan. Some would also argue for Mongolia's inclusion as a Central Asian state, something there is a legitimate argument as Mongolia shares similar terrain and the nomadic lifestyle.
