Landlocked by the countries of Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, the country of Uzbekistan is a doubly landlocked country in central Asia. Its current population is just over 29 million inhabitants, and its capital city is Tashkent. Formerly part of the USSR, the country gained independence in 1991, and has a rich history. With stunning mosques and medieval memorial buildings, market buildings and bathhouses, there are also some nature reserves, home to rare birds, wolves, jackals and reed cats. Don't miss the camel-trekking, a great way to explore the landscape near Lake Aidarkul.
