One of the largest cities of Uzbekistan, Samarkand is located on the Silk Road linking the West to China, and has been recognised by UNESCO as a cultural crossroads. The city has a population of 643,000 people living in its urban areas, and is well known for its three giant medresses surrounding the city square of Registan Ensemble. Among its many curious and wonderful sites, are the mausoleums dotted around the city as well as the ancient Ulugbek's Observatory which lies at the foot of Chupan-ata Mountain.
