With a population of 36,000 people, Ypres is a town in Flanders in north-western Belgium, close to the border with France. The site of three battles during World War I, the town suffered severe civilian losses. Much of Ypres was shell-blasted and rebuilt. Its repaired Cloth Hall dates back to the 13th century, and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. As well as soaking up the city's beautiful architecture, pay respect at the Menin Gate Memorial, and learn more of the town's past at Flanders Field Museum.
