With a population of 68,000 people, Veliko Tarnovo is a middle-sized city in northern Bulgaria, on the Yantra River. It was formerly home to the Bulgarian Emperors, and its old town was one of the main European cultural centres in the Middle Ages. One of the country's oldest settlements, Valiko Tarnovo has a rich history and was a former capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Don't miss Tsarevets, the city's old castle, which is now a ruin, but well worth a visit.
