Guide to Pula

Pula is the starting point for most holidays to Istria due to cheap flights to Pula airport with a number of operators. Too many people head straight out to a coastal resort without taking the chance to explore the city, something that is well worth doing. The Roman amphitheatre which was built in the first century is one of the biggest (literally) attractions in town. The amphitheatre is wonderfully well preserved and is still used for concerts and cultural events. It is one of the focal points of the Pula film festival in the summer where it is transformed into an open air cinema.

Pula is the best connected city in Istria, as well as Pula airport there are bus and train connections within Croatia and also to Italy. During the summer there is a Venice to Pula ferry which leaves Pula at 8am and then departs Venice at 5pm the same day. With a 3 hour journey in each direction this makes a day trip from Pula to Venice a practical option. The service runs from the start of June to the end of August with one sailing a week in June (Tuesday) and two in July and August (Tuesday and Friday.) Leaving Pula at 8am you will return at 8pm having spent 6 hours in Venice.
