Home to the mythical mountains of Santa Clause, the northern lights and the steaming sauna, Finland is located in Northern Europe, bordered to the west by Sweden, Norway to its north and Russia to the east. With a population of around 5.3 million people, the country is much less stratified than its neighbouring Norway and Sweden, and instead its landscape is one of low hills and rolling plain, forests and lakes, with reindeer and tundra to the north. In spite of this, it’s an attractive location for cross country skiers in winter, while in summer, the lakes become a swimming and fishing attraction. There are also some indelibly quirky occupations all year round to keep travellers interested, including a number of world championships in the disciplines of air guitar, mobile phone throwing, swamp soccer and wife throwing!
