Though geographically positioned closer to Italy than the French mainland, the island of Corsica is officially counted among the regions of France. Nevertheless, its colonial history and occupation under various governing powers over the generations has led to the development of a distinctive Corsican culture that displays in full colour the diversity of its origins, making it a fascinating place to visit. Roman, Ligurian, Genoese and French influences abound in the landscape and architecture of the island’s picturesque towns, nestled in the mountains or dotted along the coastline. And that’s not to mention the all-year-round balmy weather, swaying palms along the waterfront, picture perfect sunsets, green carpeted mountains and gorgeously soft-sanded beaches. It’s no wonder the Greeks nicknamed it ‘The Island of Beauty’.
