The heart of the town lies in Place de la Comedie; grab a seat on the terrace of one of the many cafes and watch the world go by. The 18th century buildings are spectacular and the huge square is the perfect spot for a little people watching. At one end is the opera which the square was named after (well not this one, the one it was named after burned down) and at the other is a park. To the west of the square is medieval Montpellier and the warren of winding alleyways is a great place to lose yourself for a few hours. Montpellier has a long history and was home to the first medical school in Europe. Students still have a significant influence on the town and the large student population is one of the things that give the town its vibrancy.
