A city on the western coast of France, Nantes straddles the banks of the Loire River, around 55km from the Atlantic Ocean. It has a total population of 580,000 people in its urban area, and is known as a port, and home to the writer Jules Verne. It's also quite rainy. As well as religious architecture and museums, such as the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany and the Jules Verne Museum, there are more quirky sights' don't miss the Machines of the Isle of Nantes, and exhibition of mechanical animals, including a ride-able mechanical elephant.
