Paris' most famous building was initially intended to be torn down after 20 years, but it was saved by the advent of radio technology. Gustav Eiffel was able to convince the French army that the tower would be a strategic advantage, in fact it was used as a listening post during WW1. One of the most obscure stories associated with the tower is the sad tale of a tailor in 1914 whose business was struggling. To promote his shop he produced an amazing flying suit which he demonstrated flying from the tower. Unfortunately he flew like a stone and leaving a substantial dent in the ground at the foot of the tower.
