Les Invalides was built on the orders of Louis XIV as a hospital for former soldiers. This wonderful complex includes the tomb of Napolean, housed in the dome church, once the private place of worship of the French monarchy. At the time of completion the king's failing eyesight meant he was unable to admire its ornately decorated ceiling. As such a lower ceiling was built, leaving large gap between the 2 domes. This space was used by the resistance during the war.The building at the front of the complex houses the Musee d'Armee, the museum of french military history and a small part of the complex is still used as a old soldiers home.
