For me, the best part of the Louvre was definitely the Mona Lisa, but that's because I am an art philistine. I was surprised to see that the smiling lady was embedded behind an impregnable glass screen though. Most of the Louvre for me seemed to be about huge gothic pictures of colourful cavaliers and elegant eighteenth century ladies, but like I said, I'm a philistine. :( It must have been free when I went (about twenty years ago) or I would not have paid, because I'm also tight fisted.

Its good when it's free- first Sunday of every month.
The Mona Lisa is there of course- but there are many other great artworks. If you don't have anything specific you want to see just wonder around. Its too big to see it all but you will come across some wonderful things.
