Introduction to Berlin

Germany's uber-cool capital is the place to party, club and bar hop. The eastern suburbs are the trendiest and 'Ossies' (East Germans) really know how to party! For some incredible architecture and a sense of history Mitte is that place to explore, this area was destroyed during the war and was rebuilt by East Germany's communist government. You will find (if you look hard enough) a memorial built on the site of one of Nazi Germany's most famous book burnings. This underground room containing empty bookshelves can be seen through a glass window in the floor.

There is no shortage of sites of historical interest throughout Berlin. A visit to the moving Kaiser Wilhelm memorial church is well worthwhile. This church was destroyed by allied bombing during the war and the haunting ruin was preserved as it was as a memorial to the war dead. Another important memorial is the disorientating memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe.  You can also learn more about German Jewish history at the fascinating Jewish Museum. A number of stretches of the Berlin wall are still in existence and boast some awesome artwork. More somberly, the details of those East Germans who died trying to cross the wall can also be seen near Check-Point Charlie.

Once part of the no-man’s land between West and East Berlin, take the time to marvel at the amazing Brandenburg Tor. While you are here why not visit the renovated Reichstag, once again the seat of German government. You can climb up to the glass dome for excellent views.
