Heidelberg was one of the few German cities that was spared allied bombing during World War Two, so unlike most German cities the old town is the real deal, which makes a visit particularly rewarding. Some of the oldest buildings are around Universitatsplatz, another place of interest around the university is the student prison. The prison was actually closed in 1914 so you are unlikely to find anyone sleeping off the effects of a night out there today. As Germany's oldest student town, it won't come as a surprise that drinking establishments around Heidelberg are many and varied. A particularly good selection can be found on Untere Strasse.
No visit to Heidelberg is complete without a trip to the castle. You will be in good company as the castle has been popular with visitors since the 1840's and boasts a great view of the town.
