A quaint and colourful coastal town on the island of Crete, Agios Nikolaos has a population of just over 26,000 people. Well linked to the rest of the island, it's a great base for exploration. Head to the lake which forms the town's centrepiece to watch the drifting fishing boats, and don't miss nearby Spinalonga, an island formerly used as a leper colony.
