Crete's largest city, Heraklion is located on the island's northern coastline, and has a total population of 173,000 inhabitants. It lies close to the palace of Knossos, and is best known as a former home to the ancient Minoan civilization, the remains of which can be seen in its Archaeological Museum. Relive the stories of the Minotaur at the famous palace; visit one of the many museums in the city or head to the Venetian castle of Koules in the city's harbour.
