Guide to Kalamata

map
In the south of Greece, the port of Kalamata and capital of the Messenia prefecture sits on the coastline, and along the Nedon River. It has a population of 67,000 inhabitants, and is near the ancient city of Pharai. It's known for its distinctive Kalamationos dance, its olives, figs and sweet pasteli, and for its beautiful location between the Messinian Bay and Mount Taygetos. Don't miss its imposing Castle of Kalamata, which dates back to the 12th century and inspired a novel about Aggelos Terzaki.
