Snake handling rituals, wine production and fictional fame: Kefalonia has its own unique and attractive personality which marks it out from the rest of the Greek islands. The largest of the Ionians, its size has enabled it to maintain a traditional vibe without being taken over by tourist towns.
Kefalonia is enshrined in many popular stories, from the romantic Captain Corelli’s Mandolin to the epic Odyssey. Both have left their mark on the island and its popular evening haunts. Captain Corelli’s Mandolin has also served to educate the world about Kefalonia’s troubled history. The 1950’s earthquake sadly led to the destruction of much historic architecture, but charming landscape more than compensates for this.
The lush greenery is thanks to the rains which fall between October and May, a blessing which can be a curse if you get caught out.
