At the beginning of 2011, the Greek island of Santorini was granted the coveted ‘Best Island’ award in the annual ‘World’s Best’ travel awards by Travel+Leisure. Located within the Cyclades cluster of islands off the Greek coast, the island was named by foreigners after its patron St Irene of Thessaloniki. The Greeks know it by its official name, Thira, after the volcano that erupted there, gutting the island and creating a volcanic caldera around whose rim the white houses of the island’s capital city Fira now perch. Whether you call it Santorini or Thira though, there is no doubt that the island is a stunning. Santorini’s ports and harbours lie on the other side of the Fira vista, in the central lagoon surrounded on three sides by the 300m high cliffs. It is best approached by sea from behind, for the best views.
