Situated in the North Atlantic, the country of Iceland lies just south of the Arctic Circle, and is a principally volcanic island. Iceland has a population of almost 320,000 people, and its capital city is Reykjavik. Known for its glaciers, hot springs and empty, dazzling landscape, Iceland's southwest is where most of the population reside. As well as several picturesque national parks, Iceland is home to the famous steaming waters of the Blue Lagoon, the sparkling Gulfloss waterfall and the Strokkur geyser. Adventurous visitors can hike; ice and glacier climb for kicks. There are also quirky knitting tours, sled rides and a cuisine ranging from conventional to curious.
