With a total population of 119,000 people, Reykjavik is Iceland's largest city, as well as its capital. It's located on the country's southwestern coastline, and is riven by the Ellioaa River, with its highest mountain of Esja peaking at 2,998 feet. Home to most of Iceland's population, the city is known for being spread over a broad area, and developed in the 18th century. Head to one of the city's unique festivals; Culture night in August revolves around cultural events and a fireworks display, or the International Film Festival, which screens its cinema in late September.
