Divided into Northern Ireland, part of the United Kingdom, and the Republic of Ireland to the south, the country has a total population of 6.3 million people. Northern Ireland has a population of approximately 1.8 million, and its capital city is Belfast, while the Republic has a population of 4.5 million, and its capital is Dublin.

Northern Ireland or Ulster encompasses the six counties of Antrim, Armagh, Londonderry, Down, Fermanagh and Tyrone. As well as being home to the dramatic landscape and World Heritage Site of the Giant’s Causeway, Bushmills whiskey and the Ulster Grand Prix, County Antrim shares the city of Belfast with County Down. Driving in Ireland

Have you got this year`s summer break organised yet? If not have you ever thought about Ireland? There is no better way to see Ireland`s many attractions than by car.

It is not going to be the fastest way of getting around and you need to be prepared to take life slowly but as the Irish would say, `So what? Why you rushing? You are on holiday.` And they would be right. Travelling by car will allow you to see and to enjoy many of Ireland`s far flung attractions, some of which can only be accessed by road.

A word of warning, however, although Ireland is not a vast country, don`t expect to see it all in one go. Many of the roads here are still quite narrow and relatively slow. So get prepared in advance before you go and plan what you want to do and where you want to go. Make sure you have an up to date SatNav system or a detailed road map

So where should you head?

A car drive is the best way to explore the stunning wilderness of Connemara in the far west. Here a network of scenic roads twists and winds through the area giving you access to this magnificent landscape. Don`t forget to visit Ireland`s only fjord at Killary Harbour and to explore the Twelve Bens, the mountain range that dominates the area.

Another must-see is the famous and fabulous Ring of Kerry in the south west with its ever changing range of spectacular scenery. There is something for everyone here.

Another unique driving experience can be found in the north west corner of the island. The Causeway Coastal Route includes the world famous Giant`s Causeway and meanders through lush green rolling countryside and up, down and over exceptionally beautiful glens. The views will just take your breath away

And at the end of every day you will have no problem finding a comfortable and a hospitable place to stay. Ireland is littered with family-run bed and breakfasts and rural farmhouses ready to offer you a bed for the night and to introduce you to some great places to eat, some of the finest fresh produce you will find in the British Isles and to the legendary Irish craic. And not forgetting Ireland`s premier alcoholic delights

Finally if you decide not to take your own car and choose to go instead for car rental Dublin is a great place to start with both international and local hire companies represented and ready to offer you a good deal. Make the most of your Ireland driving holiday; a hundred thousand welcomes await.
