Bologna is the food capital of Italy, hence its nickname of La Grassa, meaning ‘The Fat One’. In fact, tortellini was invented by a devoted Bolognese Inn Keeper who was trying to recreate the perfection of Venus’s bellybutton. The legacy lives on in the myriad of cafes and osterie (traditional taverns) throughout the city. Homemade lasagne, tortellini and tagitelli must all be sampled during a visit.
