Second only to Rome as Italy's largest city, Milan has a population of 1.3 million people living in its urban centre. It lies in the north-west of the country, among the first rises of the Alps, in the Po Valley and on the river of the same name. Milan is well-known as being Italy's financial core, for its cosmopolitan texture and for being one of the world's fashion capitals. Football lovers couldn't contemplate missing an AC Milan game, while historians will love strolling the city's many fine piazzas, libraries and galleries.
