Guide to Pompei

map
A city in Naples in southern Italy, Pompeii is located on the country's western coastline, and is famous for being home to the ruins of the ancient city of the same name. It has a total population of 25,000 people and is officially recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The city was destroyed by a volcanic eruption from Mount Vesuvius in AD79, and many of its streets, buildings and artefacts have been disinterred from the ash to be viewed by tourists, including the amphitheatre, the Form and the Temple of Apollo. Visit the Garden of the Fugitives, where plaster casts capture the exact spots where citizens were preserved at the time of the eruption.
