The city that once ruled the world is littered with sites of historical interest from many different periods, but arguably none more interesting than ancient Rome. Visit the spectacular remains of the Coliseum, where many years ago gladiators shed their blood in fights to the death to entertain the populous. You should also take in the Pantheon which has free entry and is the best preserved of the buildings of ancient Rome.
Visit the eerie catacombs that were once a burial place for both Christians and Jews and during times of persecution of Christians also a place of refuge. A visit to the Vatican may bring spiritual enlightenment, or perhaps is just an opportunity to drink in the amazing architecture are art. St Peter’s Basilica is a wonder, and also the home to Michelangelo’s first major work.
You might also like to walk up the Spanish steps for some excellent city views. Michael Caine famously drove a mini down the same steps in the Italian Job, although the most recent attempt to drive down the steps led to the driver being locked up for drunk driving and damaging a public monument. Needless to say, this was not the veteran British actor!
